Bullring of the Plaza de Toros de Acho, Lima

Bullring of the Plaza de Toros de Acho, Lima

Construction of Plaza de Toros de Acho was initiated by viceroy Armat Junyet and commenced on January 30, 1766. This is one of the oldest bullfighting rings in the Americas and the whole world, junior only to La Maestranza in Spain. Located in Rimac district, near the historical center of Lima, the Plaza was refurbished in 1946. It is built primarily of wood and adobe and is known to be the largest of all the 56 official bullrings in Peru, capable of seating up to 13,000 spectators. The arena has successfully survived multiple earthquakes that have shaken Lima over the centuries ever since it was constructed. Every Sunday of October and November the Plaza hosts the bullfighting fair called Senor de Los Milagros.

Each year it is graced with the presence of some of the most celebrated bullfighters in the world. Corrida (Spanish for “bullfighting”) is exciting and oftentimes dangerous a spectacle that has drawn to Lima thousands of viewers from across the globe year after year. Voted best local and international bullfighters receive the main trophy known as “The Scapular of Gold” (Spanish: El Escapulario de Oro). Visitors to Plaza de Toros de Acho are bound to take home a long lasting memory.
