Busanjinseong (Branch Wall-Fortress), Busan
Originally constructed by the Japanese military during the Imjin War, Branch Wall-Fortress, also known as Maruyama Castle and Konishi Castle, holds strategic significance as the first battleground during this conflict and serves as the final resting place of General Jeong Bal. This historic stronghold played a crucial role as the naval headquarters defending the southeastern coast.
The name "Jaseong," referring to a subordinate castle, has two potential origins. One theory suggests it relates to a wall-fortress on Jeungsan Mountain with Jwacheon-dong as the mother castle, while the other claims Jaseong was constructed on the mountain top as the General's terrace, known as Jasungdae. On January 4th, the site reclaimed its original name, "Busanjinseng," shedding the vestiges of the Japanese colonial period.
Unlike other fortresses, Branch Wall-Fortress showcases unique charm with walls built using Japanese construction techniques, emphasizing its historical and architectural distinctiveness. Yeonggadae, a part of the fortress, was restored in 2003 and is well-preserved, providing a glimpse into the past.
The fortress features several key elements, including the East Gate, West Gate, North Gate, Yeonggadae, and the surrounding trail. The scenic green trail surrounding Busanjinseng attracts locals engaging in exercises and foreigners exploring Korean history. Beyond the trail, visitors can explore various activities and attractions.
The Joseon Tongsinsa History Museum offers insights into the attire and roles of Joseon Tongsinsa envoys, while the Hanbok Culture Center allows people to try on traditional Hanbok attire and take photos with prior reservations.
