California Institute of Technology, Pasadena
The California Institute of Technology (Caltech) is a distinguished private research university located in Pasadena, about 11 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles. Caltech is renowned for its significant focus on science and engineering, organized across six academic divisions. Although it is compact, Caltech's impact and prestige are profound, evidenced by the achievements of its community; 31 alumni and faculty members have been awarded the Nobel Prize, and 66 have received the National Medal of Science or Technology.
Founded in 1917, the university's campus spans 124 acres and features a blend of innovative facilities and historically significant architecture. The original campus master plan was crafted by Bertram Goodhue, influenced by the Spanish mission architecture that characterizes Southern California. Goodhue's design philosophy harmonized with the local climate and the educational ethos envisioned by scientist George Ellery Hale. Notable buildings designed by Goodhue include the physics building, and Dabney Hall, among others, which together create a cohesive aesthetic that speaks to the institution’s storied past and its forward-looking academic environment.
