Calvinist Church, Pecs

Calvinist Church, Pecs

Built in 1907, the Calvinist Church of Pecs stands as a remarkable example of early 20th-century ecclesiastical architecture, blending Gothic and Romanesque influences within an Eclectic framework. Designed by Imre Schlauch, the church's most striking exterior feature is its triaxial facade, where a central tower, capped with a cone-shaped spire, is flanked by two smaller turrets. The white walls, accented with brick linings around the windows and structural junctions, add a distinctive decorative touch.

Inside, the craftsmanship continues to impress. The oak pulpit, modeled after the one in Budapest's Kalvin Square Church, serves as a focal point of the interior. The church’s original furniture, adorned with Holy Trinity motifs, was the work of master joiner Ferenc Keil alongside the renowned Pecs-based organ builder Jozsef Angster and his son. Their contributions also include the church’s organ, a testament to the city's rich tradition of instrument-making.

The adjoining Congregation House, completed in 1927, adds to the site's historical depth. Its furnishings, crafted by local artisans Gyozo Szatyor and Emil Vata, reflect the dedication of Pecs citizens to their spiritual and artistic heritage.

A harmonious fusion of styles and masterful craftsmanship, the Calvinist Church remains an architectural and cultural gem in Pecs, representing the city's historical ties to Protestantism and its enduring artistic legacy.
