Cambridge Science Centre, Cambridge
Cambridge Science Centre, located in Cambridge, represents the city's first interactive science museum. Founded by Dr. Chris Lennard and Dr. Katia Smith-Litiere, the museum had significant backing from notable technology entrepreneurs, including David Cleevely, Hermann Hauser, and Jonathan Milner. It was officially opened to the public on February 8, 2013, following an inaugural ceremony presided over by the Vice-Chancellor of Cambridge University, Leszek Borysiewicz, on the preceding day.
Originally situated on Jesus Lane, the Centre's first exhibition was centered on the electromagnetic spectrum and principles of sound and hearing, aiming to educate and engage primarily families and school groups with children aged 7 to 14. This museum not only serves as a showcase for interactive and educational exhibits but also acts as a conduit to the groundbreaking scientific research conducted in Cambridge and globally.
In December 2016, the museum closed its original location to relocate, during which time it continued to engage the public through a series of "Street Science" pop-up events. The Centre reopened in April 2018, continuing its mission to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers.
The Cambridge Science Centre hosts a variety of exhibitions, shows, workshops, and talks. Notably, it annually organizes the "Chain Reaction" engineering extravaganza. During this event, families, schools, and local companies come together to construct a massive chain of intricate contraptions that trigger each other in a dynamic display of creativity and engineering acumen. This spectacle and the Centre's ongoing programs reflect its commitment to making science accessible and exciting for all ages.
