Campo del Moro (Moorish Field), Madrid

The Campo del Moro, one of Madrid's most beautiful parks, remains surprisingly underused, primarily due to its less-than-convenient entrance located alongside the meandering river. Its name harkens back to a significant historical event, as it served as the site of the Moors' encampment during a momentous period in 1109 when they valiantly endeavored to reclaim Madrid, albeit ultimately facing defeat. Over time, the park evolved into a venue for hosting medieval tournaments and jubilant celebrations.

Following the construction of the majestic Royal Palace ("Palacio Real"), several ambitious plans were proposed to transform the surrounding landscape into a picturesque park that would complement the grandeur of the palace. However, the realization of these visionary schemes encountered numerous delays and setbacks, and it wasn't until 1842 that tangible progress was made.

The park's design revolves around two magnificent fountains of monumental proportions, known as The Shells ("Las Conchas") and The Tritons ("Los Tritones"). Its expansive grassy gardens exude a quintessentially English aesthetic, characterized by meandering pathways shaded by lush foliage and adorned with enchanting ornamental pools. As visitors meander through this verdant oasis, they are greeted by a serene ambience that offers respite from the scorching summer heat, while simultaneously providing a splendid vantage point to admire the resplendent majesty of the nearby palace.
