Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum, Hamilton

The Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum, situated at the John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport, is a tribute to the nation's aviation history. With a collection boasting 47 military jets and propeller-driven aircraft, it offers a comprehensive glimpse into Canada's aerial legacy. Among its notable exhibits are several Second World War and Cold War-era planes undergoing meticulous restoration, including the renowned Avro Lancaster, one of only two airworthy Lancasters globally.

Established in 1972 by Dennis Bradley, Peter Matthews, Alan Ness, and John Weir, the museum's humble beginnings saw the purchase of a Fairey Firefly, marking the inception of Hangar 4 at Hamilton Airport. Despite setbacks such as the tragic loss of Alan Ness in a 1977 crash, the museum persevered, expanding its collection with notable acquisitions like the B-25 and the Lancaster.

Tragedy struck again in 1993 when a fire ravaged Hangar #3, claiming several historic aircraft. However, this setback fueled determination, leading to the completion of a purpose-built hangar in 1996. The museum's commitment to preservation and restoration became evident during the Mynarski Memorial Lancaster Bomber's transatlantic tour in 2014, solidifying its status as a beacon of Canadian aviation heritage.

With nearly half of its collection capable of flight, the museum's dedication to maintaining these treasures requires approximately 4000 hours of volunteer labor annually. The museum's facilities are available for private events, ensuring a dynamic and accessible experience for all visitors.
