Capela da Boa Viagem (Chapel of Boa Viagem), Funchal
The Chapel of Boa Viagem (Capela da Boa Viagem), located in the Old Town of Funchal, was established in 1655 and was dedicated to Our Lady of Redemption. However, an inscription on the chapel's portico suggests a different foundation date of 1683. During the 17th century, the Chapel was regarded as the center of pilgrimage and later served as a chapel by the local bishops of Funchal.
In the first quarter of the 20th century, the chapel was closed to worship and was bequeathed to Funchal's Municipality. It remained closed for a decade before undergoing renovation both internally and externally. It was then reopened for the pleasure of both locals and tourists and has since become an exhibition place and a new cultural center in Funchal.
Henrique Franco, a prominent painter from Madeira, contributed 13 paintings to the chapel's collection. These pieces belong to the Henrique and Francisco Franco Museum's collection, but have always been exhibited in the chapel and will continue to be displayed for visitors to see.
Although commonly known as the Capela da Boa Viagem, the restored altarpiece reveals that the chapel's original name is the Chapel of Our Lady of Oliveira (Capela de Nossa Senhora da Oliveira).
