Capella d'en Marcus (Chapel of Marcus), Barcelona

Bernat Marcús, an influential citizen of Barcelona, played a significant role in funding various projects, including the construction of a small chapel in 1166, which served as a refuge for travelers and a hospital for the impoverished residents of Barcelona. Originally named Capella de la Mare de Deu de la Guia, it was strategically situated along the ancient Roman road that led to France. However, due to Bernat Marcús' profound impact and his charitable endeavors, the chapel came to be commonly known as Capella d'en Marcús.

The structure showcases Romanesque architecture and stands as one of the few remaining examples of this style in Barcelona. Its rectangular shape is topped with a barrel vault roof, and the absence of an apse is a result of its removal in the 18th century. The exterior of the showcases meticulously crafted ashlar stonework adorned with Lombard-style blind arcades. A magnificent bell tower crowns the chapel, featuring a belfry with two openings and a window added during the 19th century.
