Casa del Almirante (House of the Admiral), Cadiz

The Admiral 's House is a palace-house in Cádiz, a product of the city 's Indian trade, it was ordered to be built at the end of the 17th century by the family of the Admiral of the Fleet of the Indies, Diego of neighborhoods. From the outside, the magnificent marble doorway of Genoa stands out, coming from the Andreoli workshop and assembled by the maestro García Narváez. The colonnaded courtyard, the staircase under an elliptical dome and the main floor lounge still show signs of its nobility.

It is a baroque-style palace-house. In the grandiose façade, modified by the builder's son, Ignacio de Barrios, the red and white marble doorway stands out, with two bodies: the lower one with four paired columns of the Tuscan order and the upper one with a balcony framed by Solomonic columns and a pediment curved with the family crest, as well as other ornaments typical of the style. At the top, two lookout towers with pilasters finish off the ensemble.

Inside are worth mentioning: the main hall, with an irregular plan with the family coat of arms painted on the ceiling and the patio, with pointed arches on Tuscan columns; an elliptical dome on pendentives covers the stairway.

Work began in 2008 to condition it as a luxury hotel. The property has an irregular shape and an elevation of four floors. Its interior layout is centered around a patio around which the different rooms are distributed. The lower area for storage, the second or mezzanine for offices, then the noble floor where the owners live and the fourth used for service housing.

They say the city was founded by Phoenician seafarers who beached their black ships on the sandy island of Erytheia three thousand years ago.
