Casa Judía (Jewish House), Valencia

Casa Judía (Jewish House), Valencia

The Valencian Art Deco-style residential building constructed in 1930 is known as the Jewish House. It was designed by Joan Guardiola, a Valencian architect. This architectural masterpiece exemplifies the Valencian Art Deco style. In this particular building, the architect drew inspiration from various architectural styles and eras, a practice he had previously employed in other structures like the Swedish Socorro Athenaeum in 1927 and the Ferran Guardiola House in Barcelona in 1929. Consequently, the façade of the Jewish House showcases a blend of architectural elements from Oriental, Arabic, Egyptian, Hindu, and Hebrew styles.

The building acquired its popular name, the Jewish House, because of the presence of the Star of David prominently displayed on the entrance lintel. The architect incorporated this distinct symbol from Hebrew culture, which likely led to the association with the Jewish community. During that time, the Jewish residents of Valencia discreetly gathered in the building to observe their traditional religious celebrations.

The Jewish House comprises a ground floor and seven floors, with the top two floors being narrower, resembling an attic. The entire façade boasts original stylistic features, characterized by exotic and elaborate ornamentation. The entrance door, as well as the first level and the splendid finishing touches of the building, exhibit influences from Oriental, Arab, and Hindu designs.

Over the years, both the ground floor and the rooftop of the building have undergone noticeable modifications. The Hindu-style finials that once adorned the top of the structure have been removed.
