Cat House, Riga

Cat House, Riga

The Cat House is a notable building located on Master Street (Meistaru Iela) in the old town of Riga. Constructed in 1909 based on the designs of architect Friedrich Scheffel, the building showcases a blend of medieval architecture with elements of Art Nouveau. Its most distinctive feature is the pair of cat sculptures with arched backs and raised tails perched on its roof.

The origin of these cat sculptures is tied to a local legend involving the building's original owner, a wealthy tradesman. According to the most popular version of the legend, the tradesman was denied membership in the Great Guild, also known as the Riga Tradesmen's Guild. In retaliation, he placed the two copper cat statues on the building's turret rooftops, positioning them so that their tails were pointed toward the guardhouse, which was nearby. This gesture was intended as an insult to the guild members. Eventually, it was ordered that the cats be turned to face the guildhouse instead.

Another version of the legend suggests that the tradesman had a dispute with the Riga City Council. Following this conflict, he commissioned the construction of the building and placed the cat statues with their tails directed towards the Riga Town Hall. At that time, the Town Hall was in the same direction as the Great Guild. However, the Town Hall was destroyed during World War II, demolished in 1954, and only reconstructed between 2000 and 2001.

These legends contribute to the Cat House's charm and historical intrigue, making it a popular story among locals and tourists. The building remains a unique architectural feature in Riga, symbolizing its medieval past and the playful spirit of its legends.
