Cemitério de Agramonte (Agramonte Cemetery), Porto
Agramonte Cemetery, located in the western part of Porto, dates back to 1855 and was established as a response to a devastating cholera outbreak. The city's primary cemetery, Prado do Repouso, and private cemeteries were overwhelmed, prompting the need for Agramonte. The cemetery chapel, initially designed by engineer Gustavo Adolfo Gonçalves between 1870 and 1874, underwent expansion in 1906 by renowned architect José Marques da Silva. Inside, stunning Byzantine-style frescoes, created by Italian painter Silvestro Silvestri in 1910, adorn the walls.
Three religious orders—the Carmelites, the Order of Friars Minor, and the Trinitarians—secured private sections within Agramonte, as their original cemeteries faced closure. In the 1870s, monuments and family mausoleums were permitted, attracting wealthier families, and shifting Agramonte from a space for the poorer populace to one that showcased grand memorials.
Spanning 12 hectares and enclosed by a tall stone wall, the cemetery contains significant historical markers, including a memorial to the 120 victims of the 1888 Teatro Baquet fire. Several prominent Portuguese figures, such as archaeologist António Augusto da Rocha Peixoto, cellist Guilhermina Suggia, filmmaker Manoel de Oliveira, and actress Emília Eduarda, are buried here. The tombs feature exquisite works by notable sculptors António Soares dos Reis and António Teixeira Lopes, making Agramonte Cemetery not just a resting place but a reflection of Portugal's artistic heritage.
