Centenary Methodist Church, Suva

Centenary Methodist Church, Suva

The Centenary Methodist Church in Suva stands as a prominent symbol of faith and community for the Methodist Church of Fiji, the largest Christian denomination in the country. Known as "the cathedral of Methodism in the heart of Suva," the church has been a spiritual and cultural cornerstone since its inception.

The church was conceived during the centennial celebrations of the first Wesleyan missionaries' arrival in Fiji in 1935, marking a century of Methodism’s influence on the islands. Construction began nearly two decades later, with fundraising efforts starting in 1950. The foundation stone was laid in 1953 by Ratu George Cakobau, great-grandson of Fiji’s unifier, Ratu Seu Cakobau. The church officially opened in 1954, replacing an earlier wooden structure in Toorak built for the denomination’s 50th anniversary.

Though referred to as a church, the Centenary Methodist Church has a striking, gothic-inspired facade, often likened to Suva's Sacred Heart Cathedral. Its single tower on the right adds a distinctive character to its location on Stewart Street. While its exterior may appear austere, the interior surprises visitors with a bright, modern design that invites worshippers and tourists alike.

The Centenary Methodist Church serves as a gathering place for Methodists of all backgrounds, uniting diverse congregations under one roof. Its Sunday services are particularly vibrant, featuring rousing hymns that echo through the surrounding streets, drawing both the faithful and the curious. Beyond worship, the church plays a significant role in the cultural and spiritual life of Suva, reflecting the enduring influence of Methodism in Fiji.
