Cerkev sv. Janeza Krstnika (Church of St. John the Baptist), Ljubljana

The Trnovo Bridge, designed by renowned architect Jože Plečnik, not only connects the neighborhoods of Krakovo and Trnovo but also bridges antiquity and Christianity. Adorned with massive pyramids on its corners and a statue of Saint John the Baptist in its center, this 20-meter-wide bridge is a symbol of both architectural prowess and spiritual significance. Built between 1929 and 1932, it leads directly to the Church of Saint John the Baptist.

Within the church, Plečnik's influence is felt in the furnishings, including the "lamp of eternal light" beside frescoes by Matej Sternen. While much of the original 18th-century church was lost, a few paintings, notably those of Saint John the Baptist and Saint Anthony, survived. The current neo-Romanic appearance emerged after the earthquake of 1895, after an initial reconstruction in the 1850s.

But beyond the architectural and religious significance, the history of the church is entwined with a famous romantic tale of Ljubljana. It was here that Slovenia's beloved poet France Prešeren, known for his national anthem, first encountered his muse, Julija, sparking a love that endured for years. Despite his fervent devotion, Julija's strict upbringing prevented their love from being realized. Yet, Prešeren immortalized their story in numerous sonnets, forever intertwining their fates in the annals of Slovenian literature.
