Chalmers-Wesley United Church, Quebec City
Chalmers-Wesley United Church is a Protestant place of worship situated within the historic Old Quebec walls on rue Sainte-Ursule in Quebec City. This church, constructed in the year 1853, was the brainchild of architect John Wells. The architectural style of the building is a splendid representation of Neo-Gothic design, and its steeple stands out as the tallest within the confines of the ancient city walls, soaring to a remarkable height of 164 feet above the sidewalk at its pinnacle.
The church's inviting ambiance is largely owed to the richness of its woodwork and the presence of burgundy carpeting. A unique feature is the sloping floor and the comfortable curved pews, all oriented towards the organ console, a characteristic that sets it apart in Quebec City. Remarkably, seven out of eight stained-glass windows adorning the church were conceived by Wallace J. Fischer and were meticulously crafted at the Bernard Leonard workshop in Old Quebec.
In 1925, the church became a part of the newly established United Church of Canada. Notably, the accomplished composer William Reed served as the church's organist from 1900 to 1913. In 1931, the congregation of the nearby Wesleyan Methodist Church, which had also joined The United Church of Canada, merged with Chalmers United Church, resulting in the renaming of the congregation to Chalmers-Wesley United Church.
