Chateau de Flaugergues (Flaugergues Castle), Montpellier

Chateau de Flaugergues (Flaugergues Castle), Montpellier (must see)

Flaugergues Castle, a splendid example of a Montpellier folly, is a historic monument that exudes elegance and architectural grandeur. Originally purchased in 1696 by Étienne de Flaugergues, a prominent adviser to the Court of Auditors, the château was transformed over nearly half a century into its current form. Since 1811, the estate has belonged to the Boussairolles family, who have preserved it through successive generations.

The castle’s design combines a central body and two side wings that overlook a meticulously landscaped garden. Built in cut stone, the two-story structure is adorned with a hollow tiled roof crowned with glazed tile finials that enhance its Mediterranean character. The architecture, reminiscent of a 17th-century Italian villa, is further highlighted by wide bands delineating the levels.

Turning its back to the outside world, the castle’s facade opens entirely towards the garden. The rear wall is almost completely blind, with false windows creating an illusion of symmetry. The formal French-style garden, restored in the 20th century, features ten thousand boxwood shrubs and two statues, "La Paix" and "L'Abondance," created in 1728 by sculptor Jean-Louis Guyon. A three-hectare English-style park extends the garden to the southwest, connected by a 400-meter-long path lined with olive trees leading to a scenic belvedere with views of nearby ponds and the Mediterranean Sea.

The interior of Flaugergues Castle is equally impressive, with a hanging key staircase that ascends over three floors without any supporting pillar-a feat of technical virtuosity. The walls of the staircase are adorned with Flemish tapestries from 1670, depicting scenes from the life of Moses. The salons feature exquisite Louis XV and Louis XVI furnishings, family portraits, and collections of porcelain and earthenware, while the library houses a variety of ancient scientific instruments.

Flaugergues Castle and its surroundings, including the terraces, statues, wrought iron gates, gardens, and park, have been designated as historic monuments. The park and gardens, recognized as a "Remarkable Garden," stand as a testament to centuries of history, family heritage, and dedication to preservation. The estate, open year-round, is also the center of a thriving vineyard, inviting visitors to explore its rich cultural and natural landscape.
