Chiesa di Santa Maria Formosa (Church of the Purification of Mary), Venice
Nestled in one of Venice's most enchanting squares, adorned with grand palaces, is the remarkable Church of the Purification of Mary ("Santa Maria Formosa"). Standing out with its graceful and swelling apses, this church has a rich history. Designed by Mauro Coducci in 1492, it underwent extensive renovations over the span of a century before assuming its current form. Notably, it boasts two main facades—one facing the square and the other overlooking the canal. However, what captures immediate attention is the stone face at its base.
Stepping inside, visitors are greeted by Palma il Vecchio's polyptych masterpiece titled "Saint Barbara and Saints" from around 1523. This exceptional work ranks among the great Venetian masterpieces and showcases Palma's ability to depict the dignified figure of Saint Barbara, celebrating the ideal feminine beauty cherished in Venice. The patron saint of soldiers, Saint Barbara was revered for protection during times of war and praised in times of victory.
Within the church, you will also find the Conception Chapel, home to Bartolomeo Vivarini's splendid triptych, the "Madonna of Misericordia", painted in 1473. Additionally, the Oratory houses Giambattista Tiepolo's "Madonna with Child and Saint Dominic", a remarkable 18th-century artwork. As you explore further, don't miss Leandro Bassano's rendition of the "Last Supper."
It is worth noting that the church's dome was reconstructed after it collapsed during an earthquake in 1688.
Tip:
The Zanzibar kiosk bar, located near the church, is a favored spot among knowledgeable locals and tourists alike, particularly on balmy summer evenings, offering a delightful setting to enjoy a refreshing drink while indulging in people-watching.
