Chiesa di Santo Stefano (Church of St. Stephen), Assisi

Chiesa di Santo Stefano (Church of St. Stephen), Assisi

The Church of Saint Stephen stands out as one of the most intriguing landmarks in Assisi, particularly for its remarkable preservation—being perhaps the only church in the area that has undergone no significant architectural alterations since its construction in 1166, predating the birth of Saint Francis.

The architectural style is classic Romanesque, featuring a squared stone façade and an apse adorned with suspended arches. Inside, a single nave with pointed arches welcomes visitors, its walls left intentionally rough without plaster. Though time has weathered many of the original frescoes, one notable artwork depicting the Madonna with Child between Saint Francis and another saint still endures.

Tradition has it that the tolling of Saint Stephen's bell marked the final moments of Saint Francis's life, adding to the church's significance within Assisi's history...
