Chiesa Santa Maria della Grazia (Saint Mary of Graces Church), Lecce
The Chiesa Santa Maria della Grazia (Saint Mary of Graces Church) is a religious building in Lecce built in the Baroque era. The church was built following the discovery of a fresco of the Madonna, datable to the 14th century. It was built in the last decades of the sixteenth century to a design by the Theatine Michele Coluccio from Rossano Veneto, in the forms dear to the taste of the Counter-Reformation. It was a parish from 1606 to 1958.
The prospectus is elegant and is divided by an entablature, dominated by a deep arched tympanum, in two orders. The orders are in turn divided into three zones by Corinthian columns and pilasters. In the lower order there is a richly decorated portal surmounted by a small tympanum with the image of the Virgin and Child with little angels. Four niches are carved between the columns, two of which house the statues of Saint Peter and Saint Paul. In the upper order there is a window adorned with a balustrade and flanked by columns.
