Children's Playground, Denver
The Dustin Redd playground at City Park in Denver has undergone a significant redesign, transforming it into a popular regional play destination. Originally inspired by medieval themes, the updated playground now features a central attraction: a full-size, accessible dragon that is designed to be played on both inside and out. This playful and imaginative space encourages fantasy, adventure, and inclusivity, catering to a diverse range of ages and abilities.
The dragon, whimsically referred to as the "waking dragon," combines a mix of grumpiness and sleepiness, reflecting its playful nature as it "naps" while children climb all over it. The design process involved creating a complex 3D model of the dragon, incorporating layers of play elements such as ropes, nets, climbing bars, and flexible structures. The dragon's lower third is clad with caps that provide transparency, allowing for better airflow and adding to the structure's climbability.
One of the standout features of the dragon is its tail, which has evolved into rolling hoops that offer space for hiding, pretend play, climbing, and sliding. Additionally, one wing and the open neck of the dragon provide broader access to its interior. The playground also includes creatively stained play posts that resemble logs burnt by the dragon's fire, offering another layer of imaginative play as children can boulder from the dragon to the logs.
This playground is part of a broader collection of Earthscape-designed play spaces in Colorado, including locations in Washington Park, Fort Collins, Breckenridge, Boulder, Aspen, and Inspiration Point in Denver, further enhancing the state's reputation for unique and engaging playgrounds.
