Christuskirche (Christ Church), Heidelberg

This beautiful church in Heidelberg, blending Art Nouveau, Renaissance, and Gothic elements, has been a prominent landmark and a key performance venue since its completion in 1904. As you wander through the western part of town, its towering height and intricately detailed façade are immediately noticeable.

One of the church's unique features is its unusual tower roof, topped with five jagged decorations, each adorned with a copper tip supporting a 4–5 meter high cross, and a golden rooster that shows the wind direction. The tower also hosts four elaborately designed clocks, each marked with dates significant to the Reformation and named after the corresponding cities: Wittenberg, Worms, Speyer, and Augsburg. Below these, four large gargoyles representing the four Evangelists boldly project against the sky, creating a design unmatched by any other church in Heidelberg.

Inside, the church is brightly lit, specifically designed with a Protestant layout oriented towards the pulpit. The stained glass windows beautifully depict scenes from Jesus' life and the Beatitudes, from his birth and the adoration by the Magi to the Passion of Jesus and his resurrection appearance to Paul. Meanwhile, the arches on the east side feature medallions of key Reformation figures: Philipp Melanchthon, Martin Luther, and Jan Hus, while the west gallery honors Huldrych Zwingli and John Calvin, all set in Neo-Renaissance architectural decor.

The church also houses an organ dating back to 1903, which, despite being updated with electrical play and stop action in the 1950s, retains its romantic disposition and pneumatic controls, echoing the era's organ-building traditions.

Concerts at this church range from a cappella performances to string ensembles, all benefiting from the venue's excellent acoustics.
