Church of Saint Anthony, Pula
The Church of Saint Anthony of Padua in Pula stands as a significant religious landmark within the city. Constructed between 1929 and 1931, it was further developed with the addition of a small monastery in 1934. Subsequent renovations included the installation of marble paving in 1936, the construction of an apse in 1939, the establishment of an altar dedicated to the Virgin Mary Immaculate in 1941, and the paving and fencing of the presbytery by 1943.
Designed by the renowned city architect, Engineer Guido Brass, the church exemplifies a simple Romanesque style, built with contributions from the parishioners and the expertise of several notable specialists, including stone master Sebastiano Bianchini. The Franciscans were entrusted with the church in 1939, adding to its historical and religious significance.
A notable feature of the church is its bell tower, which stands at a height of 45 meters, making it the tallest building in Pula and a prominent landmark visible from various parts of the city. Inside the church, there is an organ installed in 1961 by Franc Jenko from Ljubljana, enhancing the church's musical heritage. Additionally, the large mosaic in the apse, created by Josip Botteri in 1981, adds to the artistic richness of the church.
Situated within walking distance from the Pula Amphitheater, the Church and Monastery of Saint Anthony of Padua is not only a center for worship but also a testament to the architectural and communal efforts of its time, having been built and maintained with the dedication of its parishioners and the guidance of prominent architects and artisans.
