Church of Saint Mary Immaculate of Grace, Bergamo
The Church of Saint Mary Immaculate of Grace is a historic church located in Bergamo, Italy. It is situated near the Barriera delle Grazie and serves as the first place of worship encountered by visitors arriving from the railway station. The church's origins can be traced back to the preaching of Bernardino da Siena in 1419, who aimed to reconcile feuding families in the city.
Pietro Ondei donated land for the construction of a church and convent, leading to the founding of the church in 1422. The church underwent demolition and reconstruction in the 19th century due to urban reorganization.
Originally dedicated to Our Lady of Grace, the church was renamed Santa Maria Immacolata delle Grazie following the dogmatic proclamation of the Immaculate Conception in 1854. The church was redesigned in a neoclassical style between 1857 and 1875 by architect Antonio Preda. It features a Greek cross shape, a drum with sixteen columns, and a notable dome adorned with the Glory of Mary painting by Enrico Scuri. Other artworks within the church include frescoes by Jacopino Scipioni and Giovanni Battista Epis.

Bergamo Introduction Walking Tour
The first thing you notice about Bergamo is topography. Situated at the foothills of the Italian Alps, in the Lombardy region of northern Italy, Bergamo has been divided into two parts, the Upper Town and the Lower Town (Città Alta and Città Bassa), since the 15th century. The flat Lower Town rises steeply to the Upper Town, perched on a picturesque hill's crest.
