Igreja de Sao Domingos (Church of St. Dominic), Lisbon
One of Lisbon's most active churches, the Church of Saint Dominic occupies the site where the eponymous 13th-century convent once stood, a place infamous for its association with the Inquisition, where sentences were pronounced. Although the convent was devastated by the earthquake of 1755, its portal was reconstructed shortly after as part of the current Dominican church. For more than a century, it served as a venue for royal weddings and baptisms, but its significance diminished following the establishment of the Republic. In the 1950s, a devastating fire ravaged the building, leading some to believe that it cleansed the space of its dark past, including the infamous massacre of forcibly converted Jews, known as "New Christians", which began there in 1506.
In 1997, the church reopened after undergoing partial restoration work, which involved replacing seats and certain statues. However, the vast interior and the scarred pillars still exude a haunting atmosphere that resonates with its tumultuous history. Inside, the chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Fátima garners significant attention, as she is Portugal's most revered saint. Adorned with numerous candles, the chapel houses a statue of the saint alongside two of the three children who witnessed her miraculous apparitions (the third child was alive during the chapel's construction and therefore not depicted in heaven with the saint).
