Church of St. Agata, Perugia

Church of St. Agata, Perugia

The Church of Saint Agata in Perugia stands as a captivating example of 14th-century Perugian art and the Franciscan Gothic style. Remarkably well-preserved, the church maintains its original architectural design, characterized by an ogival structure, a single nave, and two groin vaults supported by six half-columns embedded in the walls.

The church’s frescoes are masterpieces of the Umbrian-Sienese school, influenced by the celebrated artists Simone Martini and Pietro Lorenzetti, both of whom contributed to the Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi. Many of these frescoes were rediscovered during restoration work following seismic damage in 1997. Beneath Saint Francis is the rare Trifacial Trinity, a depiction of Christ with three faces. Declared heretical and banned by the Council of Constance (1414), such iconography is almost entirely lost, making this depiction exceptionally rare.

The church’s exterior reflects 14th-century Gothic simplicity, with a delicately decorated travertine gate. To the left of the entrance, a majolica ceramic panel depicts Saint Agatha, created by Maria Antonietta Taticchi and designed by Marco Mariucci. This hand-painted work portrays the saint with vibrant colors and enamel, symbolizing her inner and outer beauty and her transcendent devotion to God. Saint Agatha is revered as the patron saint of nurses and is invoked against breast diseases, earthquakes, and fires.

Below the panel, a plaque honors Monsignor Luigi Maglielli, commemorating his dedication to preserving the church and its precious artwork.

The Church of Sant’Agata is a treasure trove of medieval artistry and spiritual heritage, offering visitors a glimpse into Perugia's rich cultural and religious history.
