Church of St. Agnes and St. Pancras, Liverpool

Church of St. Agnes and St. Pancras, Liverpool

The Church of Saint Agnes and Saint Pancras, located on Ullet Road in Toxteth Park, Liverpool, is an outstanding example of Victorian ecclesiastical architecture. Recognized as a Grade I listed building in the National Heritage List for England, it remains an active Anglican parish within the diocese of Liverpool. Designed by the eminent architect John Loughborough Pearson, the church was constructed between 1883 and 1885.

The church is built with red brick and red sandstone dressings, featuring a tiled roof. Its layout includes a four-bay nave with lean-to aisles and clerestory, transepts at both ends and a short chancel with a polygonal apse surrounded by an ambulatory. The west end is marked by two porches, while the building is accented with angle buttresses, gable crosses, and a lead-covered flèche over the east crossing. Its windows are characterized by lancets or plate tracery.

Inside, the church's beauty is further enhanced by the use of Caen stone lining. The northwest transept houses a baptistry with a marble font carved by Nathaniel Hitch, who also contributed to Truro Cathedral. The nave features arcades with round piers and balconies. The northeast transept contains an organ loft, supported by a central black marble column and surrounded by ten additional columns. The Lady Chapel in the south chapel boasts a screen and reredos designed by G. F. Bodley in 1904.

The sanctuary features an arcade with angel musician statues, a frieze of the Adoration of the Lamb, and angels under canopies. Nathaniel Hitch crafted the high altar reredos and apse carvings. The Italian marble pulpit depicts Apostles and Church Fathers, while stained glass by Kempe and Bryans enhances the interior. The original Wordsworth and Maskell organ, known for its rich tone, has been unused since 1996 but awaits restoration, with a Hugh Banton electronic organ serving in the meantime.

The Church of Saint Agnes and Saint Pancras remains a testament to the grandeur of Victorian church design and a vital part of Liverpool's ecclesiastical heritage.
