Church of St. James, Liverpool, Liverpool

Church of St. James, Liverpool, Liverpool

The Church of Saint James, located in Saint James Place, Toxteth, Liverpool, is a remarkable Anglican church with a history as diverse as its congregation. Built in 1774–75 by Cuthbert Bisbrown, who also likely designed it, the church initially served as a chapel of ease for Walton parish before becoming an independent parish in 1844. Its Grade II* listed status, recognized in the National Heritage List for England, reflects its architectural and historical significance.

The church, built from red brick with stone details, features a five-bay nave, a chancel added in 1900, and a distinctive four-stage west tower with an embattled parapet, clock faces, and louvered bell openings. Inside, the "Georgian" style includes galleries supported by early cast iron quatrefoil columns. The timber roof, updated in 1846, has Norman-style arches, while the vibrant east stained-glass window by Henry Holiday (1881) serves as a focal point.

Saint James reflected the social fabric of 18th and 19th-century Liverpool, attracting both affluent merchants and industrial laborers, including black settlers from West Africa, the Caribbean, and America. Monuments within the church dating from the late 18th and early 19th centuries, some tied to the slave trade, bear witness to this complex heritage.

Declared redundant in 1974, the church was entrusted to the Churches Conservation Trust in 1976. In 2009, it returned to the Liverpool Diocese, reopening as Saint James in the City in 2010. Worship resumed in a marquee as urgent repairs were undertaken from 2011 to 2012. Despite funding challenges, the church was fully renovated by 2021, now featuring modern facilities like a kitchen, offices, and a mezzanine.

Saint James, with its Georgian architecture, cast iron columns, and stained glass, remains a resilient landmark, blending historical charm with a renewed role in the community.
