Church of the Blessed Sacrament, Rio de Janeiro

The Brotherhood of the Blessed Sacrament stands as one of the oldest religious institutions within the city. Its roots trace back to a period between 1567 and 1569, when it was initially established and subsequently located within the city's cathedrals until the early 19th century. In 1816, the members of this Brotherhood made the decision to construct their own church, which is now known as the Church of the Blessed Sacrament. This architectural endeavor was based on a blueprint crafted by João da Silva Muniz, the esteemed architect of the royal court. Four years later, they had completed the chancel, which soon became a place of worship. The entire project reached its culmination in 1875, when the elongated towers, a late-stage addition, were finished, thus bestowing the church with its Gothic appearance.

Throughout the 19th century, the church underwent substantial renovation. The interior of the church is marked by pilasters that divide it into distinct sections, providing support to the vaulted ceiling while delineating the space of the altars. This design feature harks back to an earlier era and likely reflects the initial vision put forth by João da Silva Muniz.
