City Gallery, Wellington

City Gallery in Wellington, established in 1980, is one of the top contemporary art spaces in New Zealand. It showcases unique and memorable exhibitions featuring artists from both local and international backgrounds. Initially known as the Wellington City Art Gallery, it started in a former office block at 65 Victoria Street, which is now where the Wellington Central Library stands. Its first show highlighted works by local Wellington artists.

In 1989, the gallery moved to the old Chews Lane Post Office, due to the construction of a new library and civic center. This location was its home for four years until 1993, which marked a significant change with a new name, City Gallery, and a move to its present location in Civic Square.

The building it occupies now, originally the Wellington Central Library built in 1940, is an example of Art Deco architecture. It took over from the first City Library and was revamped into a modern art gallery. An eye-catching piece is the "Fault" window installation by Bill Culbert and Ralph Hotere, added in 1994, which features neon lights and enhances the building's look.

With expansions in 2008-2009, including new spaces for emerging local, Maori, and Pacific art and a 135-seat auditorium, the City Gallery emphasizes its dedication to a wide range of artistic voices. It stands as a prominent spot for art enthusiasts and tourists worldwide, highlighting Wellington's cultural richness.
