City Hall, Catania

Catania’s City Hall, housed in the historic Palace of the Elephants (Palazzo degli Elefanti), is a testament to the resilience and grandeur of this Baroque city. Constructed in 1696 following the devastating earthquake of 1693, the building showcases a quadrangular design centered around a grand courtyard, flanked by porticoes on two sides. Each of its four façades features an entrance atrium, symbolizing the building's openness and dedication to serving the community.

The entrance to Cathedral Square (Piazza Duomo), the city’s lively center, features an impressive portal and central balcony by architect Giovanni Battista Vaccarini, who redesigned it in 1735. He replaced diamond ashlar with flat pilasters and added a detailed tribune balcony, complete with a balustrade on granite columns and statues flanking the city’s crest. The balcony serves as a viewing platform for dignitaries during religious events, especially the Feast of Saint Agatha.

The City Hall courtyard houses two ornate Senate carriages from the 18th century, reflecting the city’s rich history. These carriages play a ceremonial role during the Feast of Saint Agatha, transporting dignitaries to the Church of San Biagio for the traditional candle offering.

The square itself features Catania’s iconic lava elephant sculpture, known as “Liotru.” This Roman-era statue, remodeled by Vaccarini in 1736, combines ancient and symbolic elements, including an Egyptian obelisk and Saint Agatha’s emblems, making it a revered symbol of the city.

Palace of the Elephants’ storied past includes being a platform for historical speeches, including one by Mussolini. Its elegant interiors boast a grand staircase leading to the main courtyard and porticoes added in the late 18th century. These features, combined with its strategic position and architectural splendor, make it a focal point of civic pride and Baroque artistry.
