City Road Cemetery, Sheffield

City Road Cemetery, Sheffield

City Road Cemetery, located in the Manor district to the east of central Sheffield, is the largest municipal cemetery in the city, spanning 100 acres (40 hectares). It opened in May 1881 under the name Intake Road Cemetery. The cemetery was designated as a Grade II registered park or garden by Historic England in 2002, recognizing its historical and architectural significance.

The cemetery is primarily surrounded by housing on its north, east, and south sides, with City Road bordering the west side, where the main entrance is located. This entrance is marked by a Grade II-listed gatehouse that includes reception areas and halls of remembrance.

City Road Cemetery is historically significant for its war graves and memorials. It commemorates 220 Commonwealth servicemen from the First World War, with names listed on a Screen Wall in Section Q for those without individual headstones. For the Second World War, it honors 147 servicemen and women, mostly in Section H's war graves plot, with a Screen Wall listing those originally buried in other cemeteries no longer maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

Additionally, the cemetery features a memorial on the west side of Section H for 30 servicemen who were cremated at Sheffield Crematorium during the Second World War, along with nine war graves of foreign nationals. A focal point is the Belgian War Memorial, which honors Belgian nationals.

The cemetery also serves as the final resting place for civilian victims of wartime air raids, including a communal grave for 134 civilians who perished during the Sheffield Blitz in December 1940. This communal grave is marked with a memorial, commemorating the lives lost in one of Sheffield’s darkest periods during World War II.
