Collins Barracks Military Museum, Cork
The Collins Barracks Military Museum in Cork is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in military history, particularly the history of the Irish Defence Forces. The museum is housed in one of the oldest buildings in the barracks and its purpose is to tell the story of the personnel who served in the barracks over the past 200 years.
Opened in 1985, the museum was initially located in the Clock Tower Block. However, in 2005, it was moved to the Old Guard Room, which is located just inside the old Main Gate. This move allowed for the display of even more historical artefacts associated with key periods of Irish history, including the Easter Rising, War of Independence, Civil War, the Emergency and the Irish Defence Forces.
One of the highlights of the museum is its impressive collection of military uniforms dating from the 1800s right through to the present day. These uniforms provide an insight into the evolution of military dress over the years and are a interesting way to explore the changing face of the Irish Defence Forces.
In addition to its uniform collection, the museum also houses a wide range of military vehicles, weapons, and artefacts. From tanks and cannons to missiles and old military vehicles, the museum has something for everyone.
