Compass Bank Building, Albuquerque

Compass Bank Building, originally known as the National Building, is a tall office structure situated in Downtown Albuquerque. At the time of its construction, it was the tallest building in the state until the Albuquerque Plaza towers were built in 1990, which made it the third tallest building currently. It stands 238 feet (73 meters) tall with 18 stories, including a parking garage occupying the lowest six stories. The building reaches a height of 272 feet (83 meters) with its rooftop antennas.

Construction began on January 25, 1965, and the building was completed in 1966, surpassing the Bank of the West Tower as the tallest structure in the city. The National Building Corporation of Tennessee developed the project.

The building was designed by William E. Burk, Jr., who also designed the Park Plaza Condominiums. Its base has six stories that are wider than the rest of the building and includes a parking garage on floors 2-6. The exterior walls of the parking levels are molded concrete with an open grillwork pattern of stylized quatrefoils inspired by Moorish architecture. The upper floors have recessed rectangular windows arranged in a simple grid pattern with beveled surrounds. The ground level features battered masonry walls punctuated by narrow paired windows on the south side.
