Confluence Park, Denver

Confluence Park, Denver

Confluence Park, located in Denver's vibrant Lower Downtown (LoDo) district, is a significant urban park that sits at the meeting point of Cherry Creek and the South Platte River. This area is rich in history and has undergone considerable redevelopment since the late 1980s, transforming into a bustling district characterized by 19th-century brick warehouses and storefronts now repurposed for modern use.

The park offers a mix of recreational opportunities, including concrete trails that are popular with walkers, runners, and bikers. Visitors can enjoy grassy areas, river overlooks, and park benches, making it a pleasant spot for relaxation and outdoor activities. Two pedestrian bridges provide scenic crossings over the South Platte River and Cherry Creek, connecting different parts of the park and offering great views of the water.

One of the park's unique features is the kayak run on the eastern edge of the South Platte River. This area is a favorite for both amateur and experienced kayakers looking to enjoy the urban waterway. The park is also surrounded by several upscale townhouses, apartments, and loft developments, reflecting the area's ongoing urban renewal.

In addition to its recreational offerings, Confluence Park is a hub of activity during the summer months. The Platte Valley Trolley originates here, running along the west side of the South Platte River from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, as well as for all Denver Broncos home games. This historical trolley adds a nostalgic touch to the park experience.

Confluence Park is also historically significant as it marks the spot where William Greeneberry Russell's party began searching for gold in May 1858. Although they found no gold at the confluence itself, their discovery at the mouth of Little Dry Creek, just a few miles south, sparked the Colorado Gold Rush and led to the establishment of Denver. The park's site, which once hosted an Xcel Energy substation, has since been expanded to accommodate more green space and recreational facilities, contributing to its current role as a beloved urban oasis in Denver.
