Conservatoire Art et Histoire (Conservatory of Art and History), Annecy

The Conservatory of Art and History in Annecy is a captivating testament to the region's artistic, cultural, and historical heritage. Located in the former Grand Seminary built in the 17th century, this building has evolved from its ecclesiastical roots into a vibrant cultural hub. Today, it is owned by the Department of Haute-Savoie and serves multiple roles in preserving and promoting the area's rich legacy.

The Conservatory's Culture and Heritage Department curates rarely exhibited collections, showcasing Haute-Savoie's artistic and cultural heritage. Highlights include the Paul Payot mountain imagery collection, works by Baron d'Empire Chastel, alpine music pieces from the Jacquier collection, and paintings by local artists George Hermann and Yves Mairot.

The library of the former Grand Seminary adds another layer of depth to the Conservatory. Housing 60,000 heritage books, it is a treasure trove of religious and secular texts, owned by the Poor Clerics' Exchange and managed under a deposit agreement with the Department. The library plays a vital role in conserving and promoting these invaluable historical documents.

The Conservatory is also home to CITIA, which represents the image and creative industries, the animated film museum, and a rehearsal space for the Orchestra of the Pays de Savoie. These partnerships further enrich the Conservatory’s cultural ecosystem, making it a dynamic space for artistic expression and innovation.

Since 1975, the Departmental Council of Haute-Savoie has actively acquired works to build a robust collection reflecting the region's unique identity. From engravings and lithographs to contemporary paintings, the Conservatory showcases the depth and diversity of Haute-Savoie’s cultural patrimony.

Visitors to the Conservatory are invited to explore a harmonious blend of history and art, where centuries-old heritage meets the creative energy of today.
