Convento de San Francisco (Convent of San Francisco), Cadiz
The Convent of San Francisco de Cadiz is an old Franciscan convent located inside the old part of the city, in the central square of the same name. Only the cloister and the church remain from the original complex.
It was founded in the year 1566 by the friars of the Franciscan order, led by fray Juan Navarro, through the donations of Diego de Polanco, Nicolás de Castro Delfín and Fernando Benítez Rendón, founders of the convent. Its first stone was laid by Luis García de Haro y Sotomayor, Bishop of Cádiz, on March 25, 1566.
It was partially rebuilt in the 17th century. During the 18th century, an important reform of the building was carried out, under the direction of José Francisco Badaraco, which gave the church its current Baroque physiognomy. This reform covers, through plasterwork and vaults, different ancient construction elements.
The old convent of San Francisco occupied the current Museum of Cádiz, with an orchard in the current Plaza de Mina and a compass in what is now the Plaza de San Francisco itself. After the confiscation, the convent dependencies were considerably reduced, which are currently made up of the Mannerist rectangular cloister and the church. This convent was very important in its time due to its American connection, being key in the formation and sending of friars to America, among them the famous friar Junípero Serra.

Cadiz Introduction Walking Tour
Cadiz is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Western Europe. Some say Cadiz was founded by Hercules after performing his tenth labor, wherein he slew Geryon, the three-headed monster, and stole his herd of red cattle. Others say no. They say the city was founded by Phoenician seafarers who beached their black ships on the sandy island of Erytheia three thousand years ago.
