Convento de Santa Clara (Convent of Santa Clara), Funchal

The Convent of Santa Clara is a remarkable historical monument in the city of Funchal, dating back to the late 15th century. Originally belonging to a cloistered religious order, it is now open to visitors.

Situated on Calçada de Santa Clara, this structure was built between 1489 and 1496 by João Gonçalves da Câmara, the second captain-donee of Funchal, to provide housing for the daughters of the local nobility.

Composed of several buildings, the Convent of Santa Clara is an impressive example of architectural and artistic craftsmanship. It boasts Hispano-Arabic tiles from the 17th century on its walls, while its ceilings are crafted from wood. This complex also features a collection of restored 17th- and 18th-century paintings.

A visit to the Convent of Santa Clara offers the opportunity to explore the atrium, the São Gonçalo de Amarante Chapel, which is believed to have been constructed in the 16th century, the porch leading to the choirs, and the Gothic cloister. Lastly, be sure to see the Santa Clara Church, commissioned by João Gonçalves Zarco, the discoverer of the island.
