Çorakkapı Camisi (Çorakkapı Mosque), Izmir
The Çorakkapı Mosque is a historical mosque located in the Basmane district of Konak, Izmir. It stands prominently opposite Basmane Train Station and near the 9 Eylül Gate of Izmir Culture Park, making it a notable landmark in the area.
The mosque, founded by Hacı Mustafa Efendi, is often called Bostânî Mahmud Efendi Mosque, as Bostanizâde Mehmed Efendi is buried there. The mosque's history is documented through records from 1706, 1717, and 1745, although its exact construction date remains uncertain. Originally, it was part of a larger complex that included a cemetery and a madrasah, located near the borders of the historic Muslim Turkish quarter of Izmir.
The architectural design of the Çorakkapı Mosque is distinct, with a transverse rectangular prayer hall covered by a central dome resting on an octagonal pulley. The main dome is complemented by three smaller domes on the sides, creating a harmonious structure. The marble pulpit (minbar) and the stone-cut minaret highlight the mosque's fine craftsmanship. The mihrab section features three round windows and delicate plaster decorations, adding to the mosque's serene atmosphere.
The mosque is surrounded by a small courtyard at the front and burial grounds on its western and southern sides. The last congregation area is topped with five domes, all covered in lead. Despite its historical significance, the mosque remains active today and serves as a place of worship for the local Muslim community. It was last restored by the General Directorate of Foundations in 2004.
