Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church, Fort Lauderdale
Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church, located in Fort Lauderdale, is a Christian megachurch affiliated with the Presbyterian Church in America. Founded in 1960 by D. James Kennedy, a significant figure in the church's history, it quickly became a landmark in the religious and cultural life of the region. Kennedy, who was born in 1930 and passed away in 2007, led the church as its senior pastor for nearly five decades, until shortly before his death.
The church's current building, which can accommodate 2,300 worshippers, was dedicated on February 3, 1974, by the renowned evangelist Billy Graham. This dedication marked a pivotal moment in the church's development and its expanding influence. Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church officially joined the Presbyterian Church in America on May 16, 1978, transitioning from its original affiliation with the Presbyterian Church in the United States, often referred to as the "Southern" church, before the latter's merger in 1983.
Under Kennedy's leadership, starting in 1978, the church expanded its reach through the Coral Ridge Hour, a weekly televised service that broadcasted to a nationwide audience, at one point reaching over 3 million viewers. After Kennedy died in 2007, new broadcasts ended, but his legacy persists through D. James Kennedy Ministries, airing his sermon excerpts and news segments on the show Truths That Transform.
Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church is also known for its commitment to education, founding and overseeing Westminster Academy and Knox Theological Seminary, both situated in Fort Lauderdale. W. Tullian Tchividjian, Kennedy's grandson and a descendant of Billy Graham, served as senior pastor from April 2009 until June 2015. In June 2016, Rob Pacienza took over the helm as the church's senior pastor, continuing its mission and ministry into the present day.
