Crescent Bend Armstrong Lockett House, Knoxville

Crescent Bend Armstrong Lockett House, Knoxville (must see)

Crescent Bend is a historic home located in Knoxville. Its name is derived from the bend of the Tennessee River where it is situated. The house is also recognized by other names such as the Armstrong-Lockett House, Longview, and Logueval.

Crescent Bend was constructed in 1834 by Drury Paine Armstrong, a public official, merchant, and farmer. The building is estimated to have cost Armstrong $5,517, and it once served as the centerpiece of a 600-acre (2.4 km2) farm. The Armstrong family built three early homes on Kingston Pike, including Crescent Bend, Bleak House, built by Drury's son Robert H. Armstrong, and Westwood, built by Drury's granddaughter Adelia Armstrong Lutz (1859–1931). During the Siege of Knoxville, Confederate General Joseph B. Kershaw used Crescent Bend as his headquarters.

Crescent Bend is part of the Kingston Pike Historic District and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The house is a classic brick farmhouse with a collection of 18th-century English and American furniture, decorative arts, and silver. The property boasts formal Italian gardens with nine terraces and five fountains, which are open to the public.
