Crkva Svete Ane (Church of St. Anne), Kotor
The Church of Saint Anne stands as a testament to Romanesque architecture, sharing its elegant design with the nearby Church of Saint Luke. Recognized for its historical significance, this architectural gem is an integral part of Montenegro's cultural heritage and has been safeguarded as a protected cultural monument since 1960. Following the restoration efforts after the 1979 earthquake, it was reconstructed to reflect its original appearance, which had been altered by subsequent modifications.
Dating back to the early 13th century, the church was initially dedicated to Saint Martin before later honoring Saint Veneranda. Evidence of its rich history is found in the remnants of frescoes discovered on both the exterior and interior surfaces. Notably, a depiction of Saint Christopher, patron saint of travelers, with a miniature Christ on his shoulder and signed in Cyrillic script, can be seen in the facade's relieving arch. Inside, frescoes attributed to the esteemed Kotor painter Lovro Dobričević adorn the walls, depicting figures such as Saint Martin and Saint Catherine, accompanied by prayers inscribed in the vernacular language. These frescoes, approximately a century younger than their exterior counterpart, offer a vivid portrayal of religious devotion and artistic expression from bygone eras.
