Crypt Chambers, Chester
Crypt Chambers, also known as Crypt Building, is a remarkable architectural and historical site located on Eastgate Street in Chester. This Grade I listed building, as designated in the National Heritage List for England, stands as a prime example of Chester's rich medieval and Victorian heritage, incorporating a section of the iconic Chester Rows.
The site of Crypt Chambers has deep historical roots, being built atop the undercroft of a medieval house that remains intact today. The present structure was designed in 1858 by the notable architect T. M. Penson as a department store for William and Charles Brown of the Browns of Chester family of drapers.
Crypt Chambers is a four-story building with attics, constructed using red and yellow sandstone and topped with a roof of brown tiles. Its asymmetrical façade is a striking blend of Victorian design elements and medieval inspiration. A standout feature is its square stair turret, which separates three bays to the east and a wider bay to the west.
The undercroft entrance is accessed via five steps under the turret, while eight steps in the eastern bays lead to the Row level. The ground floor features shopfronts, and the Row level displays cast iron railings, molded arches, and stallboards. Inscribed panels on the turret mark its origins, with initials for William and Charles Brown and the date 1858. The upper floors showcase arched two-light windows, slender columns, oriel windows on the tower, and gabled dormers. The turret ends in a truncated spire with gabled dormers and a cast iron railing.
Crypt Chambers is a testament to Chester's layered architectural history, seamlessly blending medieval craftsmanship with Victorian ingenuity. It continues to be a key feature of the city’s historic streetscape, attracting visitors and scholars alike.
