Cultural Centre Reduta, Brasov
The "Reduta" Cultural Center in Brasov stands as a beacon of cultural heritage, rooted deeply in the city's artistic history. Established in 1794, it was Brasov's first performance hall, echoing the grandeur of a similar establishment in Vienna after which it was named. Designed in a late Baroque style with Rococo elements, Reduta initially served as a venue for balls and performances, located in the historic heart of the city on Apollonia Hirscher Street (formerly Teatruli Street).
Reduta has been graced by notable figures; Johann Strauss performed here in 1848, and in September 1879, it hosted the violinist Johann Joachim and pianist Johannes Brahms. This venue also played a critical role in the Romanian theatrical movement, hosting the first theater performances in Romanian during the first half of the 19th century by a group of amateur artists led by George Baritiu, Andrei, and Iacob Muresianu.
The original building was demolished in 1892 but was swiftly reconstructed in 1893-1894 with funding from the "Kronstadter Allgemeine Sparkasse" Bank. The new Reduta was crafted under the vision of city engineer Christian Kertsch, showcasing a facade adorned in Italian Renaissance style, embellished with busts of cultural titans like Wagner, Schumann, Mozart, Beethoven, Goethe, Schiller, and Shakespeare.
From 1948 until March 1959, Reduta served as the home of the State Theater and later became part of the Palace of Culture. This institution embraced a myriad of cultural and educational activities, including independent theatrical groups and dance ensembles from Romanian, Hungarian, and German communities.
Today, Reduta boasts a main performance hall with a capacity of 370 seats and features several other dedicated spaces like the "I.C. Vasiliu" Ballet Hall, the "Franz Liszt" Music Hall with 70 seats, the underground Arcadia Hall, and a smaller Council Hall. This historic building is recognized as a monumental piece of Brasov's cultural landscape, continuing to enrich the artistic and cultural life of the city.
