Curve Theatre, Leicester

Located in the heart of Leicester’s Cultural Quarter, Curve Theatre is a landmark of modern theatrical design and a hub for live performances. Originally known as the Leicester Performing Arts Centre, the venue opened in 2008 and was officially inaugurated by Queen Elizabeth II on 4 December. Designed by renowned architect Rafael Vinoly, the theatre’s striking curved façade, built from 1,192 tonnes of steel and 46,000 square meters of glass, sets it apart as one of the most distinctive performance spaces in the UK.

At its core, Curve is a theatre without barriers—literally. Unlike traditional venues, it has no backstage area, offering visitors a rare glimpse into the production process. Through its open-plan foyer, guests can observe actors moving between the 970-seat Theatre, the 350-seat Studio, and the behind-the-scenes world of stagecraft. Impressively, the stage can be opened up to the public by lifting two 18-tonne steel walls, creating an immersive experience visible from the street.

Managed by the Leicester Theatre Trust, Curve is more than a performance venue—it’s a charitable organization committed to fostering new talent, engaging local communities, and producing world-class theatre.
