DA2 Domus Artium 2002, Salamanca
Established in 2002 to coincide with Salamanca’s designation as European Capital of Culture, DA2 Domus Artium 2002 stands as a testament to cultural renewal. It occupies the former provincial prison, constructed in the 1930s, which was thoughtfully remodeled by architect Horacio Fernández del Castillo. Notably, the redesign preserved evocative remnants of its penal past-cell doors, iron grilles, and the original structure-integrating them into the public art experience.
Functioning under the Salamanca Ciudad de Cultura y Saberes Foundation, DA2 was created to fill a growing need for a dedicated contemporary art venue. Its exhibition program champions cutting-edge practices, emphasizing video, new media, and installations, while hosting national and international artists alongside emerging local talent.
Spanning nearly 10,000 m², DA2 offers an exhibition space, a library, auditorium, shop, café‑restaurant, and a playroom. Its collections evolve, remaining sensitive to evolving trends. Notable names include Joseph Beuys, Mona Hatoum, and Candida Höfer, along with the Coca‑Cola Collection featuring over 300 works by artists like Ana Laura Aláez and Dora García.
DA2’s role extends beyond exhibitions. It hosts guided visits, workshops, lectures, and cultural events-engaging all ages and collaborating with the University of Salamanca on educational programs.

Salamanca Introduction Walking Tour
Usually, frogs inhabit marshy lands, not the sun-baked plains of central Spain. Yet Salamanca is the exception. The small stone frog adorning the façade of the University of Salamanca keeps a watchful eye over visitors. Local legend says that if you find the frog among the carvings, fate will one day bring you back to the city.
