Dampfmaschinenhaus für Sanssouci (Steam Engine House for Sanssouci), Potsdam

The Steam Engine House (Dampfmaschinenhaus) in Potsdam is a remarkable blend of architectural grandeur and technological innovation, reflecting the ambitions of King Frederick William IV. Constructed between 1841 and 1843, this unique building was designed by Ludwig Persius to serve as a waterworks facility. The structure is an architectural curiosity, resembling a mosque with its Moorish style and a minaret that cleverly conceals a chimney. This distinct design has earned the building the nickname "Potsdam Mosque."

The Steam Engine House was part of Frederick William IV’s broader vision to showcase Germany's technological prowess, especially in comparison to England. The centerpiece of the building was an 81.4-horsepower steam engine, built in 1842 by Borsig, which played a critical role in ensuring a steady water supply to Potsdam's gardens. The engine pumped water from the Havel River through a 1.8 km pipe, powering the 38-meter-high fountain in Sanssouci Park-a technological marvel of its time. The original engine served for 50 years before being replaced by a more powerful 160-horsepower engine, which remained in use until 1937.

Despite the advancements in water supply techniques over the years, the Steam Engine House has remained largely intact, preserving its historical significance. Since September 1985, it has operated as a public museum and a monument to technical achievement. Visitors can explore the building from May to October, with guided tours available on weekends and public holidays. These tours include a demonstration of the original steam engine in operation and a permanent exhibition detailing the history of the building and its machinery.

Laid out at the behest of Friedrich William II in 1787, Potsdam's Neuer Garten (New Garden) was indeed "new" compared to the already in place Sanssouci Park.

Between 1816 and 1828, the area was modified further as an English-style, open landscape garden, with an aim to reproduce nature – trees and plants were left to grow naturally, unshaped and untrimmed. Rural life was also...  view more

Sanssouci Park is a unique Potsdam landmark that occupies 290 hectares in the heart of the city. The Park is named after the Sanssouci Palace that it surrounds, which in turn takes its name from the French phrase "sans souci", which means carefree, and implies that the palace was designated as a place of fun, rather than a seat of power.
