Dante Hall Theater of the Arts, Atlantic City
Dante Hall Theater of the Arts is a historic performing arts venue located in the heart of Atlantic City's Ducktown district, a neighborhood traditionally known as the city’s Little Italy. Originally constructed in 1926 as an addition to Saint Michael’s Catholic Church, the building served as a church hall, school gymnasium, and community theater for the predominantly Italian-American community. The venue remained dormant for years after Saint Michael’s closed its parish school in the late 1980s.
A significant turning point for Dante Hall came in 2003 when an extensive renovation, funded by the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority, restored the building and transformed it into one of South Jersey’s premier cultural venues. The theater reopened as the Dante Hall Theater of the Arts, offering an intimate yet dynamic space for local and professional performances.
In 2011, Stockton University took over the theater's management, further cementing its role as a hub for artistic and cultural expression in Atlantic City. Though under the university’s administration, the building remains the property of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Camden. Today, Dante Hall Theater is a 220-seat performing arts center that hosts various events, including live concerts, theater productions, opera, film festivals, and children’s performances.
The architecture of Dante Hall reflects its rich history, with its original design credited to A.F. Amodio and construction carried out by the Abacus Construction Company. Built with steel, stone, and brick in the Italian Tucson style, the three-story structure was initially envisioned as a multi-purpose facility. The original plans included an auditorium capable of seating 1,500 people, classrooms, a library, playrooms, locker rooms, and a kitchen. The building was officially completed and inaugurated on October 13, 1929, during the silver jubilee celebration of Saint Michael’s Church.
Today, Dante Hall Theater of the Arts remains a vital part of Atlantic City's cultural scene, offering a space where the community can engage with the performing arts in a historic and intimate setting.
