Davie Village, Vancouver

Davie Village, also referred to as Davie District or simply Davie Street, constitutes a vibrant neighborhood situated in the West End of Vancouver. Notably, it serves as the epicenter of the city's gay subculture, earning its distinction as a "gay village." The focal point of this area is Davie Street, encompassing the vicinity between Burrard and Jervis streets. The nomenclature of Davie Street, and consequently the encompassing Village, pays homage to A.E.B. Davie, the eighth Premier of British Columbia during 1887 to 1889.

Prominently adorning Davie Street lampposts are banners of Davie Village. These banners bear designs inspired by the artistic vision of Joe Average. Noteworthy is the sun banner conceptualized by this artist. In 1999, the Davie Street Business Association aptly christened the neighborhood "Davie Village" while concurrently engaging Joe Average to craft these distinctive banners. Suspended gracefully along the street, these banners feature a dual-sided presentation: one side showcases a rainbow flag, while the other exhibits Joe Average's sun motif. The emblematic significance of these rainbow flags, signifying gay pride, is mirrored by numerous businesses and residents along Davie Street and the broader West End, where these flags proudly flutter.

Davie Street hosts an array of establishments, including shops, eateries, services, hotels, and private abodes, all catering to a diverse clientele. Furthermore, Davie Village serves as the home to various entities. Noteworthy among these are Xtra! West, a biweekly LGBT newspaper, Qmunity (previously known as the Gay and Lesbian Centre), a hub for an array of services benefiting the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender populace, and the Vancouver Pride Society, the driving force behind the annual Pride Parade and Festival.
