Deichtorcenter (Deichtor-Center), Hamburg
The Deichtor-Center in Hamburg is a distinctive architectural landmark at the entrance to the city's central area in the Hamburg-Mitte district. Constructed between 2000 and 2002, this office building was designed by the architectural team of Jens Bothe, Kai Richter, and Hadi Teherani from BRT Architekten.
Strategically located on the southern edge of Deichtor Square (Deichtorplatz), the ten-story, triangular building is characterized by its Z-shaped office blocks which are mirrored on every fourth floor, enhancing the building's spatial dynamics. This design creates voluminous three to four-story spaces within, which are accentuated by four conservatories and two four-story entrance halls. These elements function as green "shop windows," contributing to the aesthetics and providing a serene working environment for occupants.
The building’s envelope is constructed from prefabricated reinforced concrete with a facade composed of aluminum and glass, which not only offers climatic and sound insulation but also allows for almost natural ventilation of the interior spaces—thereby optimizing energy efficiency related to cooling and heating demands.
The design of the Deichtor-Center, with its tapered triangular shape resembling a ship's bow, pays homage to Hamburg's maritime heritage and draws a visual connection to the historic Chilehaus in the nearby Kontorhaus district.
Since its completion, the Deichtor-Center has seen several changes in ownership, with the building now under the ownership of BNP Paribas Real Estate Investment Management (REIM) since 2020. Among its notable tenants is the ZDF regional studio in Hamburg, emphasizing the building's significance in the local business and media landscape.
